Lastly, you can find curricular goals and current topics for each core subject on this page. We like to keep all parents and guardians informed about what it is their child is studying throughout the year.
We will be focusing on building our number sense to 100. Some concepts students will be taught is to count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, identify numbers as odd or even, ordinal numbers, estimation, rounding to the nearest 10 and comparing and ordering numbers to 100.
We will continue working in our Guided Reading Groups. This will help students become better readers, review basic sight words, and learn new reading comprehension strategies.
In terms of writing, students will be writing about How To Carve a Pumpkin and Friendly Letters. For both of these types of writing there are formats that must be followed as well as always remembering sentences require a capital letter at the beginning, punctuation at the end, a who, and a what.
This month the students will learn that the land, water, and climate in Iqaluit, Saskatoon, and Meteghan are all different. The students will also learn why people settled in these communities, and how the land affects the identity of these communities today, just like long ago.
We are continuing our study of magnetism. Students will learn most materials are transparent to a magnet. They will discover a magnetic field passes through some materials. Students will be required to create a device that uses a magnet. We will then begin the study of our next unit on Exploring Liquids. Students will learn about the nature of liquids and the interactions of liquids with other materials. They will also explore liquids by examining droplets, by watching liquids trickle down slopes, by investigating flow rates and by observing liquid interactions with a variety of materials. Students will also describe the surface of calm water. Then we will compare water with one or more other liquids, such as cooking oil, glycerine or water mixed with liquid detergent.
